  • Description: DiDi (Khaled)- 1992 This is the song that created ripples in the minds of fundamentalists so much so that poor Cheb Khaled had to leave his country and settle in France fearing threat to his life. His signature song, Didi, became extremely popular in the Arabic-speaking countries and also in several other countries, including India and Pakistan. The song was also used in a Bollywood film titled Shreeman Aashiq. Khaled and Don Was appeared on the "The Tonight Show" on February 4, 1993. The song was covered by Turkish pop singer Tarkan for his 1992 debut album Yine Sensiz and as an English song by German-based duo Milk & Honey. Khaled Hadj Brahim (born 29 February 1960), better known as Khaled is a raï singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist born in Sidi-El-Houri in Oran Province of Algeria. He began recording in his early teens under the name Cheb Khaled (Arabic for "Young man Khaled") and has become probably the most internationally famous Algerian singer. His popularity has earned him the unofficial title "King of Raï". Lyrics: (Arabic) Ana pharl rlia ountia la Manderlek brida manebki rlek La zharl la mimoun la gozel REFRAIN: Didi didi didi di hazine di ouah Didi ouah didi didi di hazine di didi hey yeh Manederlek brida manebki rlek Manederlek brida mane sakse rlek La zherl la mimoun la gozel REFRAIN: Didi didi didi di hazine di ouah Didi ouah didi didi di hazine di didi hey )Teh La badek rlia el jbal ghaka Derl el makadelech bal el ghaka Hsabt el rnilioun ou rIa mendarga REFRAIN: Didi didi didi di hazine di ouah Didi ouah didi didi di hazine di didi hey yeh ******** DiDi (English Translation) (Well this might be the probable meaning of the above song . if I am correct) On a dark desert day in a land far away you took my heart - that's the price that i pay. Why'd you hurt me this way, wish you'd come back and stay. Just remember the promise we made. You used to be my one and only lover. You went away and left me for another. Now you wanna come back to me Uh didi didi . You tell me we should get together. I tell you no no, never ever. Baby can't you see now I'm free Uh didi didi .. On a dark desert day in a land far away you took my heart - that's the price that i pay. Why'd you hurt me this way, wish you'd come back and stay. Just remember the promise we made. Islamic fundamentalists' threats Algerian Islamic fundamentalists were violently opposed to raï because of its sometimes irreverent tone and the fact that raï singers freely addressed issues considered taboo in Islam, like sex, drugs, and alcohol. Singers like Khaled articulated socially progressive, more modern themes that many younger people identified with, a way of rebelling against the constraints of the older generations and more traditional Islam. As Khaled says himself, "in rai music, people can express themselves. We break taboos". This open embracing of taboo subjects in Islamic culture can be witnessed in the video of Khaled's hit song, "Didi", showing women provocatively dressed and dancing, both taboos in Islamic culture. However, due the nature of these lyrics, fundamentalists were infuriated when the Algerian government, in the wake of a hugely popular 1985 raï festival in Oran, officially declared it to be one of the country's native music styles. In response, fundamentalists sent death threats to some raï artists. The danger forced Khaled to move to Paris in 1986. In 1994 these threats materialized when another raï artist, Cheb Hasni, was murdered. Due to threats involved the video shooting of this particular song was done in the US.
